Bunions

Why do bunions occur?

Bunions occur because of several things, including your gait (how you walk), shoes, and genetic background. These factors cause the bones at the front of your foot to change position, making the big toe joint bulge outward.

Without treatment, the toe joint becomes increasingly misaligned, resulting in pain, swelling, and mobility problems.

What are the symptoms of bunions?

Bunion symptoms include:

  • Hard, swollen bump at the base of your big toe
  • Red, swollen big toe joint
  • Difficulty wiggling your big toe
  • Corns and calluses on top of your big toe
  • Chronic toe pain

You might notice that your symptoms get worse when you wear shoes like high heels or cowboy boots that squeeze your toes together.

Should I see a foot and ankle surgeon about bunions?

Yes. Bunion deformites will continue to progress over time. The progression of a bunion deformity can lead to foot pain, limitations in daily acitvity and make it hard to find shoes that fit comfortably

Dr. Cormier will make personalized treatment recommendations to keep you on your feet.

How are bunions diagnosed?

Dr. Cormier diagnoses a bunion by examining your big toe joint. Most bunions are red and swollen, so they’re easy to see. Dr. Cormier will perform a foot and ankle physical exam and assess your big toe’s range of motion. She orders X-rays to determine the alignment of the bones in the front of your foot.

How are bunions treated?

Dr. Cormier treats bunions with an evidence-based, patient-centered approach. She might suggest:

  • Custom-fitted orthotics (shoe inserts)
  • Wider-toe boxed shoes
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medication to reduce swelling

If your symptoms continue or get worse after trying the above treatments, Dr. Cormier may recommend surgical intervention to addresses bunions at their source.

During the procedure, Dr. Cormier realigns your big toe joint. This eliminates the bunion, relieves pain, and restores your mobility.
